The Road So Far...
Bit of a snag this week. My daughter came down with a sinus infection. Her doctor ordered xrays, just to be a little extra diligent in her treatment. And the night before we took her to the hospital to have them done, I injured my leg. I'm not sure how it happened. We decided to try walking on it. Stretch it out. It only got worse. Over the course of the next few days I rested. I may have pushed myself a bit too hard that first day, because by the third day, the cramp in my upper thigh was visible. My fiance pointed out a prominent lump on the side of my thigh where he could see the muscle tightened. I don't know if it would be considered a Charley horse. It lasted several days before finally dissipating. The pain only became manageable as of yesterday. Which means, I only went for a walk once this week. That goal was not met this week. I did meet my calorie goal, and my water goal for the week.
The more important goal this week was the mental health goal. And it definitely came in handy. With the injury, I was feeling a little more stressed than usual. Knowing I couldn't take my walks had me wound up. I had to find something to do. Something to help me focus and feel productive. Thank goodness I had made a goal to complete a crochet project. Crochet helps me calm down. It's my own little activity of self care. I love creating beautiful new pieces. This month I started a blanket throw for our daughter to keep in the car. She's always falling asleep on long drives. And complaining she needs a snuggie. After completing about a quarter of the blanket, I realized it might take a bit longer than I had anticipated to complete the project. So, I thought to myself, "What else could I make to go with this throw, that I can work up a little faster?" The idea popped into my head almost instantly. A travel pillow! So while we were out of town for the xrays, we picked up the supplies.
I was impressed at how quickly this project worked up. I did divert a bit from the original pattern. I found it was easier to clip the ends and sew them up separately than to keep the crochet continuous. It was easier to match up the sides this way, at least for me. I also used a slightly bigger hook than the pattern called for originally. It seemed appropriate to use the hot pink K hook, considering the project is for my daughter whose name begins with a K and whose favorite color is pink. In any case, it turned out beautifully!

I used Bernat Baby Blanket yarn in the variegated colors called "Petunia", a 6.5 mm or size K crochet hook, Poly-fil fiber stuffing for the pillow, a pair of scissors, and a yarn needle to sew in the ends.
I was impressed at how quickly this project worked up. I did divert a bit from the original pattern. I found it was easier to clip the ends and sew them up separately than to keep the crochet continuous. It was easier to match up the sides this way, at least for me. It's so comfy too!
Our daughter has used it every night since I made it. I think using the bigger hook gave it a bit more flexibility. The U bend is larger, so it fits more loosely and can be used on her shoulder to catch her head on the side, rather than worn on the back of her neck which she didn't feel comfortable with anyway. It's a great feeling to know she loves this pillow.
Coming up in the next week, I have an appointment with my doctor to discuss the fibromyalgia medication. Perhaps finding a balance between going too easy and going too hard on my muscles. February will begin, which means new goals are on their way. And I'm hoping to do a January round up summary. See where we are after finishing this first month!
Until next time, sending you positive thoughts and good juju! ❤
